Guido's Rhombus No.10 Guido's Rhombus No.7 Guido's Rhombus, installation view Guido's Rhombus No.24 Guido's Rhombus No.22 Guido's Rhombus No.19

James Lahey presents Guido’s Rhombus, the end result of a six year exploration initiated by a conversation between Lahey and his mentor, the great Canadian abstract painter Guido Molinari. Molinari was a member of Quebec’s Plasticien movement in the late 50’s. The master painter, whose well-known Chromatic Quantifier series consisted of haunting, vertically striped paintings, encouraged Lahey to make a series of paintings “on the point”, shortly before his own death in 2004. Lahey had a lifelong fascination with Molinari’s work, and so took up the challenge. James Lahey has exhibited Guido's Rhombus, which represents a true departure from his image and landscape paintings, at three galleries across Canada, including the Museum of London, Galerie de Bellefeuille in Montreal, and now Winsor Gallery in Vancouver. The response to the works has been unilaterally positive. Dennis Reid, Chief Curator (Research) at the Art Gallery of Ontario, writes: “These paintings embrace the chromatic of the master, but deliver an experience of remarkable warmth and fluidity that far surpasses emulation. As in all of Lahey’s work, but perhaps never so effectively as here, the paintings address theory, technique, sensibility, content, scale, and the elements of beauty. Most importantly, though, each piece is understood as a singular object that resonates deep consideration of every possible aspect of its forms and circumstance”.
