Panorama Mesdag Museum: The summer exhibition in the Panorama Mesdag Museum shows an overview of the work of the British artist Patrick Hughes (Birmingham, 1939). Optical illusion is central to the paintings and 3-dimensional multiples of Hughes; the works seem to move with the eye of the beholder! Hughes is generally considered to be a Surrealist artist. Hughes’ work is characterized by austere architectural lines of books, buildings and landscapes, but also creations of other artists unexpectedly appear. The intriguing views continue to surprise the viewer as their position relative to the work changes. The shifting horizon is the most striking relationship between the Panorama Mesdag and paintings of Hughes. As with the Panorama, the top and bottom of the image is concealed; this is essential for the spatial effect.
